Hair Removal

Why wax in the first place?

Waxing is one of the best ways to temporarily remove unwanted hair. It is more effective than shaving as it removes hair from the roots, not just from the skin’s surface. Over time, hair in waxed areas regrows lighter and sparser or not at all. It allows for greater comfort and freshness, endorses culture and lifestyle, displays bodyart to its full potential, increases self confidence and heightens sensitivity in the most private of areas.

Which areas of the body can be waxed?

Wax can be used on almost any part of the body as needed. It is wise to test a small area first for sensitivity. Some frequently waxed areas for women are legs, underarms, bikini line, eyebrows and face. For men, it’s the chest, leg, arms, and back. The exceptions for waxing are beards and inside the ears.

What Wax will be used ?

I have been using hard or hot wax since I started waxing, when they weren’t commonly known or widely used in the beauty industry. Classed as ‘new generation’ waxes they contain Polymer which has revolutionised the waxing sector.  These products are far superior to other waxes:

In their composition – they are warmed on a low heat, creamy in texture, with polymers that make the waxes more pliable and less sticky than traditional waxes.

In the way they are applied – using a technique that ‘shrink-wraps’ around the hair only, resulting in a targeted, easier and more comfortable removal – perfect for sensitive and intimate areas.

In the results they achieve – successful at removing coarse, stubborn hair and by not attaching to the skin, resulting in little or no irritation. Many clients don't even exhibit temporary raised follicles, a common and normal response to waxing.

How long will waxing results last?

After your first wax, the results can last three to six weeks, depending on the individual’s hair regrowth pattern. In most cases, hair growth is minimal during the first week or two and noticeably increases in the third and fourth week.

Heat stimulates hair growth so hair grows quicker in the summer than in the winter. With regular waxing, the length of time between treatments will increase. Continued waxing results in sparse hair regrowth.

Will the hair grow back thicker?

Absolutely not. It might seem so because you will have become accustomed to a hairless zone, but in reality, regrowth will usually be finer and slower. Eventually, hair growth may stop altogether.

Are there any health precautions to keep in mind?

We do not recommend waxing for people with diabetes or who have varicose veins or poor circulation as they are more susceptible to infection. Waxing is never done on clients taking Accutane and is not recommended for clients using Retin A, Renova, Differin or other types of skin-thinning acne medications.

We advise clients to read the label carefully and consult their Doctor if they are taking any medication or using any topical cream that contains these medications. Individuals do react differently to these medications and sometimes waxing can be done if proper patch testing is completed.

We also need to check if you are allergic to any foods - because if you can't eat it, you shouldn't put the extracts on the skin. It is important for you to be completely honest about all allergies and medications you are taking – it is for your protection.

Pregnancy

It may be more sensitive when you're pregnant and when you reach the third trimester it will take a little longer to get into the correct and most comfortable position but waxing is safe throughout your whole pregnancy.

What are the possible side effects of waxing and how can they be minimised?

Clients must ensure hair growth is at least 5mm to maximise results – about the length of a grain of rice. We also advise you to exfoliate and moisturise in the run up to a wax to ensure all hairs are present and ready for removal – also recommended regularly to discourage ingrown hairs where hair gets trapped under dead or dry skin.
Such grooming really is recommended and helps achieve greater results – if you’re paying for the treatment you really want to maximise on the results.

Although I can not predict or guarantee who may react, most clients do not experience reactions beyond redness and minor irritation. Hair may break at the root during waxing, causing some hairs to grow out faster. These guidelines should help you to minimise irritation and possible breakouts.

  • Clients should bathe prior to waxing (avoiding all lotions and potions) as bathing after is not advised.
  • Avoid the sun immediately after waxing and wear sun screen; recently waxed areas are prone to hyperpigmentation (permanent darkening of the skin) if exposed to the sun. Sunbathing, saunas, steams, swimming in fact exercise of any description is off the menu for 24hrs – try to schedule your appointments accordingly
  • Do not use exfoliating products (e.g. AHAs, scrubs) or loofas until at least 24 hours after waxing but regular exfoliation will be helpful, especially on legs and arms
  • After treatment clients are advised to keep newly waxed areas as clean and cool as possible to minimise infection risk. Avoid tight clothing especially in newly waxed areas as this may result in irritation and ingrown hairs
  • Routine waxing helps the skin get accustomed to the procedure and may minimise irritation
  • Waxing can cause tenderness and raised follicles, particularly on first, prolonged or irregular sessions. This is normal and again very short lived. Products are available that can be applied topically to avoid ingrown hairs and condition the skin for better waxing results. You’ll be given further aftercare treatment and advice at your appointment.

How long does a wax treatment take?

Depending on the body part and the density of the hair growth, a waxing appointment will take between fifteen minutes and one hour.

What is the difference between a Bikini wax and a Brazilian wax or anything In-between?

A standard bikini wax is more conservative and generally involves removing hair to just inside the swimsuit line. Hair removal is limited to the front of your body only and does not include the legs or abdomen. The Brazilian technique has gained popularity and involves hair removal around the anus, perineum and vagina, leaving only a small strip of hair at the front. This is a very intimate type of waxing and will only be performed after careful consultation. Another option is to gradually remove more hair on each appointment until a Brazilian look is achieved. Hollywood waxing is the full removal of hair as per the Brazilian but also removal of the strip of hair at the front. But everyone is different and we all like what we like so from legs to toes and eyebrows to nose the choice is yours.

Periods

Is it possible to have waxing treatments while on my period? Yes, we can still provide treatments but it maybe a little more sensitive at this time, so we try and plan your treatment with this in mind.

Any Other Advice?

We suggest you avoid coffee and tea or any caffinated drink for at least 2 hours before waxing.

Please be advised that for your comfort and peace of mind Wet Wipes will be available for a freshen up before treatment.
